Driving through Kansas was pretty. Bob was especially smitten with it.
We've come to Dodge City, Kansas. It was made famous in Gunsmoke and in the history of outlaws and Cowboys. Bat Masterson and Wyatt Earp were among others who worked to make the 'Wickedest little city in America' into safe town. And to make it famous.
We had thought this would be a simple stopover but we ended up having a great time. We stayed at Gunsmoke RV. Quite a nice place.
Bob and Matilda went to the Longbranch Lagoon, a new water park in town. ($7/5/0) They had an awesome time. There are water slides and a play area and a wave pool. Fun for big and small. Matilda even got up the courage to do the slides on her own. (On a related note Matilda is now 48" tall. When did this happen!) Bob said she kept up with him the whole time.
All of us visited Boot Hill Museum. We got then combo tickets ($30/24/0). We got two days entrance the museum (tho a few hours was plenty for the kiddos). There were quite a few different displays. There was info and artifacts from the plains Indians , the outlaws and sheriffs that made the area famous, guns, fashion, schoolhouse, church, stores, and everyday life. There were many artifacts and tons of information.
The kiddos got sworn in as deputies of Dodge City by the Sheriff.
Our combo ticket also got us dinner and a couple shows. The dinner was delicious- brisket, creamed corn, biscuits, coleslaw, potatoes and apple crisp.
After dinner there was an outlaw gang/sheriff show. It was cute (but way too loud for Matilda.) Milo LOVED it.
Then we went to the Longbranch Saloon for the Can Can show with Miss Kitties' ladies. It was quite a show. (Perhaps a bit bawdy for "family entertainment" but over our kiddos' heads.) There was dancing and singing and comedy. If you got tickets early you got to sit up close and there was a lot of audience interaction which was fun.
The best part was at the end when one of the girls gave Matilda can can lessons. She was over the moon and had a blast. So cute.
We got an "Old Timey" photo taken there. We had wanted to do it before but it was always crazy expensive. It wasn't too bad here. And was super fun. It was a nice last visit. We could have spent more time.
Our travels now take us south. Oklahoma is our 27th state.
And here we are. Back in Texas! Our travels are just about over. It is fun to be back in Texas.
We are spending a few nights in Amarillo in the Drury Hotel. A last little hotel vacation. Reading, working, swimming and Then down south to Fredericksburg where we will finish our travel. What an adventure!!
